How to Make Money Using Receipt Hog

Being a stay-at-home mom, I'm always looking for new ways to make and save money from home. This phone app is a great way to make a little money back every time I shop!

You many or may not know this about me, but I’m a stay-at-home mom. That means money is always tight.

My husband and I had the conversation very early on in our relationship. I wanted to know what his ideal future family life looked like. To my surprise (and delight), his ideal family was very traditional. Once kids came into the picture, he would work while his wife stayed home raising his kid(s).

He was exactly the kind of guy I was looking for. There was no way I wanted someone else, be it a daycare provider or a grandparent, taking care of and helping raise my child.

So, when I found out I was pregnant with Bee, there was no doubt in my mind that I would become a stay-at-home parent upon her arrival.

I watched my parents do it, my dad worked while my mom stayed home raising and homeschooling three kids. My brother and his wife have been doing the same thing for 6 years, minus the homeschooling part. I’d witnessed the struggle, I knew we would be in the same boat.

I expected the hard times, I knew we’d have to make sacrifices. Gone were the days when we could afford to do whatever we wanted. Gone were the days when we could purchase anything we wanted without much worry of money.

What I didn’t expect, though, was my urge to continue to contribute from home somehow. I’d spent the last 10 years of my life working, receiving financial compensation for the hours I put into my job.

Don’t get me wrong, raising my daughter is rewarding. But when we’re struggling to pay a bill or buy groceries, I feel like I’m not doing enough to help. Being the person who is at home all day, I feel like it’s my job to find a way to make sure ends meet.

These feelings of inadequacy led me to cash back apps, including this awesome one called Receipt Hog.

I’ve talked about Checkout 51 and Ibotta in the past, but this app is different from those. With this app, it doesn’t matter what you buy or where you shop. You are rewarded for every purchase you make.

It’s simple, too.

  • First you go shopping. Buy whatever you need from any store, be it a gas station, grocery store or hardware store.
  • Next, open Receipt Hog and press the Camera button.
  • Your camera will open up and you snap a picture of your receipt.
  • Receipt Hog will ask you a question, usually about your shopping experience, and then processes your receipt.
  • Once your receipt is processed, you are rewarded with spins, coins or both.
  • For every receipt you submit you are entered into the monthly sweepstakes. Winners are chosen at the 1st of each month. You can win anywhere from 20-5,000 coins.

Being rewarded with spins means you get to use the app’s slot machine. Each spin offers you a chance to win extra coins or cash, with the grand prize being $100.

Your coins accumulate until you have enough to cash out. You have the option of having it sent to your PayPal account, receiving an Amazon gift card, or (and this is new) choosing one of their magazine subscription offers.

Personally, I choose the Amazon gift card every time.

Last Christmas I used Ibotta, Checkout 51 and Receipt Hog, along with a couple other tricks, to pay for Christmas. Some people say that using these apps is too time consuming and just not worth it, but I say they are worth it. Every dollar counts! And I can’t argue with a nearly free Christmas!

Are you a stay-at-home mom? How do you make it work? What sacrifices have you made? What tricks do you use to save and make money while raising your little one(s)?
